Amalfi is the most famous jewel of Amalfi Coast and gives the name to the whole coast

Amalfi is so famous and loved by everyone that many Italian and foreignpeople choose to live their wedding day in Amalfi. In fact Amalfi is theperfect setting To live a special wedding day thanks to its natural beauties,its architecture, the hotels, the restaurants, etc. And family and friendsreceiving the invitations will surely be surprised and happy to live thisimportant event in such a beautiful place. The perfect setting for the idealwedding ceremony is the Cathedral of Amalfi, dedicated to Saint Andrew. It hasa long staircase made of 57 steps and a polychrome façade, the bronze portalwas made in Constantinople in XI century. Theinhabitants of Amalfi do love their Patron, in fact they dedicate every here agreat feast to their Saint, on 30th November. In this day they also recall themiracle of the Saint: A liquid goes out from his tomb: it’s called “manna”.Each year in this date the statue of the Saint is taken in a procession bywhite-dressed men. The procession arrives to the beach then it goes back to thecathedral where fisherman leave offerings to the Saint (fresh fish). In theevening then there are wonderful fireworks. The feast for Saint Andrew is justone of the many events taking place in Amalfi during the year, that attractmany people not only from Amalfi Coast, such as in June the week made ofseminars, reviews, meetings dedicated to the paper of Amalfi; the feastdedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua on 13th June; the touching Christmas night,when the comet comes down from Ziro tower on Tabor Mountain (24th December),and many others.

The most important event is however the internationally known Regatta of thefour Sea Republics: it takes place each four years, in June, in Middle Ages costumesmade in 1950s by the scenographer Scielzo.

In Amalfi tourists will find interesting monuments to visit, not onlythe Cathedral: ‘Paradiso’ cloister, with small crossed arches, built in XIIcentury in Gothic-Arabic style, surrounded by an Arabic portico; the museumdedicated to paper; Castriota Palace built in XV century; the museum dedicatedto rural life with all the tools used for agriculture; the civic museum with“Tabula de Amalpha” (the maritime law code) and “Codice Foscariniano”, a greatcollection of manuscripts of XVII century together with the costumes of theRegatta, and others.

The main resource of Amalfi is tourism: Amalfi is loved by tourists fromthe whole world. In 1879 the famous writer Erik Ibsen had the perfect inspirationto complete his masterpiece “A doll’s house”, while he waswalking through thenarrow streets of Amalfi. In XX century Amalfi became a globally famous touristdestination, the “dolce vita” arrives from Rometo Capri and Amalfi: film directors, artists, actors, and actresses came to Amalfi Coast,especially to Amalfi.

As in the other towns of Amalfi Coast, in Amalfi you willfind a great gastronomy. Lemon is the most typical product, with its thick andtender peel. A delicous liqueur is made from the peel, called “pane” (bread):it’s the limoncello o “sfusato amalfitano”, one of the most drunk liqueurs in Italy.All the towns of Amalfi Coast produce Limoncello andexport it also abroad. During the summer a festival celebrates lemons andlimoncello.

Amalfi is perfect for an exciting holiday because it is also the perfectbase for short journeys in the surrounding beautiful places: from its portferries to Capri and Sorrentoleave several times a day.
