Atrani, on Amalfi Coast, the smallest municipality in Europe
In fact its territory is only 1 square km. Thistown was founded during Middle Ages and still keeps its narrow streets withvaults and arches, all covered in a white mantle of lime. The name Atrani hasuncertain origins: some scholars think that it comes from the Latin adjective“ater”, that is dark, because Atrani is like a cave among high rocks over thesea. Atrani is like a crib, especially during the night with all the lights.
Even if a very small town, Atrani has interesting monuments to visit,for example the Collegiate Church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, built in1274 to thank the Saint who had freed the town from Saracen invaders;Scarpariello Tower, called “di ficarola” because near it there was a fig tree(fig in Italian is 'fico’). In Atrani you will find also natural beauties, suchas its caves, “Grotta dei Santi”, a small natural cave with paintings ofByzantine inspiration portraying the four Evangelists and the warrior saint,Saint George; Masaniello cave, the place where the rebel Masaniello took refugeafter the rebellion in Naples.
Duringthe year in Atrani there are interesting and nice events, such as the feast ofthe Patron, Saint Mary Magdalene, on 22nd July; Blue fish and anchoviesfestival, in August; the descent of the star from Civita mount, that is thecomet that led the three kings to Nazareth.There are also fireworks and the solemn deposition of the Child Jesus, on 24thDecember; and others.
Themain protagonist of gastronomy in Atrani is anchovy. Fishing has always beenvery important in the past, especially that of anchovies. The inhabitants of Amalfi Coastcalled people from Atrani “Magna Alice” (“Anchovies eaters"). From thesmall beach the fishing lights depart during the night to go fishing, thuslighting the sea in a very charming way. Today the old fishermen are able topredict the weather in almost a perfect way.
