Ravello

So visiting Ravello, on Amalfi Coast, means living a great music experience

Ravello is the symbol of music on Amalfi Coast: in Ravello during the year there are many important music events, that attract people from all over the world. The main events are the concerts at sunset during the summer; the international competition of opera singers, in September; New Year’s concert, and many others.

The international music festival is famous in the whole world: it is the second most ancient Italian festival. This music festival is dedicated to Richard Wagner, the great musician, who stayed in Ravello in 1880. The programme of the festival is always very intense and very attractive, with several sections, for example that of symphonic music played by the best orchestras of the world. During the festival there are also seminars, meetings, and other events.

Ravello is one of the beautiful towns of Amalfi Coast: it is like a terrace over a crystallinesea, surrounded by uncontaminated landscapes, whose main colour is the yellow of lemon trees.

The charm of Ravello has always enchanted its visitors: the famous Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio was really enchanted by Ravello (and by Amalfi Coast). He set in Ravello one of the short stories of Decameron. In his short story, Landolfo Rufolo, the main character, Landolfo, was from Ravello. Also the great English painter, William Turner, was deeply touched by the beauty of this territory and he made beautiful sketches of Ravello and Amalfi Coast (these sketches today are in the famous Tate Gallery, in London). Many famous artists of the past came to visit Ravello, for example French writer André Gide; painter Mirò; and many others.

The main attractions of Ravello are the villas: Villa Rufolo was built late in XIII century. It is decorated by two towers in Arabian – Norman style. A charming boulevard leads visitors to Richard Wagner’s terrace (it’s called Wagner’s terrace because the musician imagined that this park was the magic garden of Klingsor in his masterpiece “Parsifal” on 26th May 1880). Villa Rufolo is the setting of the famous international music festival taking place every summer. The garden is wonderful, with its coloured flowers.

Villa Cimbrone is the other famous villa of Ravello, loved by tourists. It has a beautiful boulevard decorated by statues and small temples, such as the one dedicated to Bacchus. Ravello has also beautiful churches that deserve a visit, such as the Cathedral, built in XII century.

Tourists choosing to spend a holiday in Ravello will find everything they need: interesting events, beautiful and relaxing natural environment, tasty and typical gastronomy, the ideal accommodation (from elegant hotels or houses to cheaper bed and breakfasts), friendly and professional people, and much more.

Staying in Ravello is the perfect occasion also to visit the other jewels of Amalfi Coast, to have a trip to Capri o Ischia, to visit Pompeii and its excavations, to make a short journey to Salerno or Naples. So a holiday in Ravello will be interesting and relaxing at the same time, you will surely never get bored!!!
