Scala

Scala is one of the many jewels and treasures of Amalfi Coast

Tourism is surely its most important resource thanks to the natural reserve “Valle delle Ferriere”. This is an example of exceptional beauty with an uncontaminated nature and very rare plants, such as Woodwardia radicans.

Tourists coming to Scala love very much its most typical products: for example chestnuts used to make delicious jams and cakes. Chestnuts are also kept in water or pumice and are very tasteful when roasted or simply boiled. During the Autunmn, in October, a delicious festival is dedicated to chestnuts. Other typical products and resources are citruses and vineyards, together with aubergines, potatoes and other vegetables. In Scala, as in the rest of Amalfi Coast, lands are cultivated with the terracing system that creates a unique landscape.

Delicious liqueurs are produced in Scala, such as “Limoncello” and other liqueurs made from mulberries, herbs and many kinds of fruit.

Another important resource is wood. The inhabitants of Scala inhabitants have always provided the wood for the Sea Republic, Amalfi: wood was used to build very strong ships, first used for war, then for commerce. Wood was also used to make objects and tools for the house. Handicraft was in effect very important, as it is today.

The main event in Scala is the feast for the Patron, Saint Lawrence, celebrated on 10th August. The town also dedicated a beautiful cathedral to its Patron; this is a large building with a nave and two aisles, the floor is glazed and the portal is Romanic. In the crypt there are wood sculptures of XIII century and a Gothic stucco sepulchre. In Scala there are also other churches that deserve a visit, for example the one dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. A natural treasure is the cave called Grotta dell’Ovo.

If you choose to spend your holiday in Scala, as in the other towns of Amalfi Coast, you will surely have all the perfect ingredients for a perfect stay: friendly people; hotels; delicious gastronomy; interesting places to visit.

You should also remember that staying in Scala also means having the possibility to visit the near beautiful places, such as Amalfi, Naples, Salerno, Sorrento, etc. So you can have short and nice trips in your holiday.
