Tramonti is the town of pizza on Amalfi Coast
The name Tramonti comes from the ancient phrase “erra Tramonti”, due to the position of the town, “intra montes”, between the mountains.
The inhabitants of Tramonti made pizza famous all over the world. In the past, almost all the houses of Tramonti had an oven to cook toasted bread. People cooked pizza with the same dough used to prepare bread. Pizza was seasoned with tomatoes called "sponsilli" (kept under porticos), olive oil, and maybe lard, then garlic, oregano. The richest added also anchovies. Pizza was cooked together with the bread in the oven, without embers and flames. The inhabitants of Tramonti developed a very good pizza and they brought its flavour all over Italy thanks to the many restaurants they opened. Every summer in August a “delicious” festival dedicated to pizza takes place in Tramonti. The festival of pizza is just one of the many events taking place in Tramonti during the year. There are also other important moments in Tramonti, that attract people from all Amalfi Coast, for example Saint Anthony of Padua Feast (13th June); Lemon festival (August); Wine festival (August), and many others.
The territory of Tramonti is a windy one, this is why Flavio Gioia, the improver of the wind rose, called a rigid wind of the north “tramontana”.
