Erchie, a small village to the west of Cetara, on the road to Maiori, has religious origins dating back to circa 1000 AD. It was supposedly founded as a Benedictine Monastery, St Mary of Erchie, by either the Amalfitan Doges Mansone III or John II. Its troubled history, and occasional abandonment following human or natural disaster, is reminiscent of much of the Amalfitan Coast, and lists devastation by the Saracens in 1154, interdict in 1451 and the handing over to the city of Salerno by Pope Nicholas V. The church of the monastery was re-consecrated in1966 and restored to its former Renaissance glory. Today, it is recognised by its outstanding landmark, the Saracens' Tower ("Torre Saraceni") which stands jutting out on a small headland, between the two bathing beaches of Erchie. The economy, though swelled by tourism, is still based on the citrus - that go to make the local liquor "Limoncello" - and olive farms of the surrounding terraced hills.
